India, Netherlands Set to Launch Green and Digital Maritime Corridor

In a significant move to bolster bilateral trade and logistics connectivity, India and the Netherlands are preparing to establish a Green and Digital Corridor linking Indian ports with Europe via the Port of Rotterdam. The initiative was a key highlight of Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal’s visit to the Netherlands from April 24–26, 2025, aimed at strengthening economic and maritime ties between the two nations.

During his visit, Barthwal held strategic discussions with Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, at the World Port Center. Talks revolved around enhancing cooperation in port infrastructure, sustainable maritime practices, and logistics digitalisation. The Port of Rotterdam — Europe’s largest and among the world’s most advanced ports — is being positioned as a critical gateway for Indian exports to Europe, especially for emerging sectors like green hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia and methanol.

The proposed Green and Digital Corridor will focus on streamlining logistics flows between the Port of Rotterdam and major Indian ports like Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla. It is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating clean energy trade, improving port operational efficiencies, and adopting smart logistics solutions. With India aiming to expand its port capacity under the Maritime India Vision 2030, the collaboration also opens opportunities for knowledge-sharing and technology transfer in port modernisation, automation, and sustainable supply chain management.

“This initiative is a timely step towards creating greener, faster, and more efficient logistics corridors for Indian trade with Europe,” said an official familiar with the discussions. “It complements India’s goal to become a global clean energy hub while optimising its port infrastructure to handle future trade growth.”

Industry observers believe this partnership could significantly enhance India’s maritime logistics competitiveness and support the country’s ambitions in renewable energy exports. The visit also set the stage for continued collaboration in port digitalisation, green shipping practices, and trade facilitation between the two nations.
